Spring Student Scholarships

It was another successful Spring of student events in which four students received scholarships between $300 and $500.

Don Nichols Scholarship Competition 

‍

Starting in December, just in time for winter break, we challenged creative college students to put their talents to the test in our annual advertising competition.

‍

This year’s theme, “Flip the Flop”, invited students to identify a real-world advertising or design campaign that missed the mark, analyze why it failed and reimagine it through a single, powerful creative concept that got it right.

‍

Undergraduate students across Western New York studying design, writing, communications, illustration, photography, fine arts and related disciplines were encouraged to enter. The competition welcomed work in any medium – posters, advertisements, poems, illustrations, booklets, games, sculptures, photography, mockups and more. The goal was simple: bring a great idea to life. Best of all, participation was completely free.

When submissions closed in March, a panel of judges from Crowley Webb reviewed the entries and selected this year’s scholarship recipient. The top honor and a $500 scholarship went to Christy, AAF Buffalo’s own Student Liaison and a rising senior at Villa Maria College, for her thoughtful reimagining of a recent Levi’s campaign. Student Portfolio Review

In April, we had the pleasure of hosting a Student Portfolio Review at Daemen University. Creative professionals from Riveter Design, Crowley Webb, FourthIdea, Mr. Smith Agency and OLV Charities volunteered their time to provide guidance and feedback to a talented group of emerging designers.

‍

Students received one-on-one reviews focused on strengthening their portfolios, standing out in a competitive job market and preparing for their next professional opportunities. In addition to the portfolio reviews, three students were awarded scholarship money.
